Giovanni Vincenzo Macedonio’s Gioia non allegrezza is a secular madrigal for SSATB voices. The text speaks of joy and happiness, not mere delight, residing in the heart of a faithful servant of true and chaste love. It paints a picture of nature displaying all its charms, calling the beloved a flower of an eternal, flourishing May. The second stanza compares the young woman’s beautiful countenance to that of the sun, whose cheerful ray enlivens the whole world.
