This delightful SATB madrigal by Filippo Azzaiolo captures a lover's lament. The words express a joy once felt in singing for a beloved, now overshadowed by sorrow as she remains hidden and causes him pain. He pleads with his lady to listen to his troubles, having come to her specifically to share his suffering. Azzaiolo's setting, typical of secular Renaissance part-music, would have been intended for intimate, private performance, bringing the expressive Italian text to life with rich vocal harmonies.
