Germinavit radix Iesse

This motet by Antonio Cifra is suitable for Advent or Christmas services. The text, sung in Latin, speaks of the sprouting of Jesse's root, the star appearing from Jacob, and the Virgin giving birth to the Savior. It is a prayer of praise to God. Cifra's setting is written for two basses (BB), offering a rich and resonant sound. The composer was active in Rome in the early 17th century, a period of vibrant sacred music composition, and this work reflects the contrapuntal and harmonic language of the time.
