Gentil madonna by Filippo Azzaiolo — Lyrics
About Gentil madonna
This Italian secular madrigal for SATB voices expresses the devotion of a lover to his 'gentle lady', the patroness of his heart and life. He declares her his sole, firm column in the world, the remedy for all his ardour, and has come to confess all his pain, which stems from Love. He implores her not to remain indifferent, as he truly loves her. He praises her as his dear adornment and wishes to be hers. He states his fidelity and asks her not to be cruel, living in the hope of her trust. The music would have been composed for the entertainment of the court or cultured circles in Renaissance Italy.
