H. Battre's Gaudens exulta is a secular motet for SSAA voices, sung in Latin. The text is a celebration of the town of Cennacum, highlighting its association with a church dedicated to the Virgin Mary and recounting a miracle performed there by Christ. The composer draws on a long tradition of celebratory motets, perhaps intended for local civic or religious occasions. The flowing, celebratory Latin text describes the town's merits and its sacred church, blessed by the Virgin Mary, and recounts a specific miracle of Christ returning five youths drowned in a river back to life, restored and healed.
