Gaude Maria virgo by Ludwig Senfl — Lyrics

Gaude Maria Virgo, cunctas haereses sola interemisti. Quae Gabrielis archangeli dictis, credidisti. Dum Virgo Deum et hominem genuisti: et post partum Virgo inviolata permansisti. Dei genitrix, intercede pro nobis.

About Gaude Maria virgo

Ludwig Senfl's Gaude Maria virgo is a powerful setting for double choir (SATBB). The Latin text is a Marian antiphon, a prayer to the Virgin Mary. The composer's writing is rich and complex, with the two choirs interacting in intricate polyphony. The text begins with a joyful exclamation, addressing Mary as the one who alone has destroyed all heresies and who, having believed the words of the Archangel Gabriel, gave birth to God made man. She remained inviolate in her virginity after childbirth, and the antiphon implores her as Mother of God to intercede for us. Victoria's addition of 'in universo mundo. Alleluia' broadens the scope to a universal declaration of praise.
