Francisco Valls’ motet Fulcite me floribus for SATB voices in Latin opens with a rich, imitative texture that gradually unfolds the evocative biblical text. The composer vividly portrays the longing expressed in the lyrics, particularly the plea to be 'sustained with flowers, surrounded with apples; for I languish with love'. This devotional text, drawing on imagery from the Song of Songs, also describes the beloved as a 'fenced garden, a fountain sealed', and a 'well of living waters'.
