About Fuggi pur se sai

Giovanni Gabrieli's Fuggi pur se sai is a secular Italian partsong for double choir (SATB.SATB). The text expresses the lament of a lover whose beloved, Dori, flees from him. He argues that fleeing is futile, as love can only be conquered by more love, not by escape. He calls her ungrateful, not just to him but to her own great beauty, which breaks every heart. The music reflects the emotional turmoil and the lover's plea, with the two choirs interacting to create a rich and dramatic soundscape. Gabrieli, a leading composer of the Venetian school, masterfully uses the double-choir format to heighten the expressive power of the text, exploring contrasts and imitative passages between the vocal groups. This is a powerful example of late Renaissance polyphony, rich in colour and pathos.
