Fuggi, o mio core

Antonio Cifra's Fuggi, o mio core is a compelling SAB madrigal for mixed voices. The music immediately reflects the text's urgent plea for the heart to flee from the beauty of eyes and hands that conspire to capture it. Cifra masterfully portrays this dramatic conflict, with the voices engaging in imitative counterpoint and moments of striking harmonic dissonance to represent the heart's capture and eventual surrender. The Italian text speaks of the futility of escape, as the heart is already ensnared and doomed to 'die'. This secular work is a fine example of the Italian Renaissance madrigal, offering both expressive depth and technical challenge for choirs.
