About Free Grace

Jeremiah Ingalls’ Free Grace is a hymn tune with a message of redemption. Sung in English by a treble, solo, and bass choir, the piece sets words of assurance that Christ’s sacrifice offers pardon and salvation for all. The text, presented in a familiar four-line stanza form with a recurring chorus, speaks of a fountain of cleansing and plenteous redemption flowing from Jesus. The music, typical of American sacred collections of the period, presents the message with directness and fervent conviction. Its structure and harmonic language would have been readily understood by congregations of the early 19th century.
