Fra speranza by Cornelius Verdonck — Lyrics
Fra speranza è timore, fra viver m'insegna,
chi mi tolse il core.
Dicendo chi dispera per un breve
disdegno o per un riso.
S'inalza al paradiso poco seguir
può l'amorosa schiera.
Ma chi speme etimor nel cor mantiene.
E vero amante e lungo amor sostiene.

About Fra speranza
Cornelius Verdonck was a Franco-Flemish composer of the late Renaissance. Fra speranza is a secular Italian madrigal for SSATTB voices. The text explores the delicate balance of hope and fear that can accompany love. It suggests that despair, even for a brief slight or a fleeting smile, can lead one to believe they are ascending to paradise. However, true love and unwavering affection can only be sustained by those who hold both hope and fear within their hearts, fostering enduring devotion.
