About Forsaken
When we prepare music for Holy Week, we look for pieces that help the congregation truly feel the weight of Christ's sacrifice. "Forsaken" does exactly that. Written from the perspective of Jesus during His passion, the lyrics capture the intense sorrow and ultimate surrender of the cross. It begins with the agonizing question, "How long, O God, will You neglect my prayer?" before moving into a willing, heartbreaking acceptance of the path ahead.
As a choir, singing this anthem requires a deep emotional connection to the text. The music shifts from quiet, expressive pleas in the opening to a powerful, sweeping declaration as Christ takes on the judgment of the world. The recurring phrase, "Forsake not man, but Me, Your sinless Son," serves as the emotional core of the piece. It is a striking and solemn choice for Good Friday services or Lenten reflections, ending on a hushed note that leaves the church in a space of quiet, profound gratitude.
