About Flanders
The text of this setting is Psalm 11, a prayer of confidence in God amidst the machinations of the wicked. The composer Samuel Babcock sets this in a way that would suit a three-part choir of treble, bass, and alto voices. The psalm begins by expressing a plea for help as enemies draw their bows, seeking to ensnare the righteous in secret. It contrasts the destructive actions of sinners with the steadfastness of God, whose throne is in heaven and whose eyes observe the humble. The text moves to a contemplation of God’s justice, examining both the righteous and the wicked, before concluding with a description of the punishment awaiting sinners and the affirmation of God’s just nature. The work combines Latin and English texts.
