Filli, mirando il Cielo

Mariano Tantucci's Filli, mirando il Cielo is a secular Italian madrigal for SATTB voices. The text, by Ottavio Rinuccini, paints a poignant scene of a young woman, Filli, gazing at the heavens and lamenting her suffering in love. She describes herself as being 'distilled in tears', languishing and dying from love's pangs, finding no pity from the sky or stars. She emphasizes her youthful beauty, with golden hair and rosy cheeks, but foresees a future torment when her hair turns to silver. This exquisite piece captures the Renaissance ideal of expressing complex human emotions through intricate vocal writing and evocative text painting, typical of the madrigal genre.
