About Far potess'io
Giovanni Ferretti was a composer of the Italian Renaissance, and this work belongs to the genre of madrigals. Set for SATTB voices, Far potess'io is a secular piece in the Italian language. The text expresses the torment of a lover whose beloved, by her very gaze and speech, destroys him. She then conceals herself, deepening his pain. The poet laments how his spirit is consumed, finding no rest at night, and how his soul, driven out by death, flees to the very one who threatens it. He wonders if his beloved, even while hearing his pleas and embracing him, might break his spell and listen.
