Fammi una gratia, amore by Heinrich Isaac — Lyrics
About Fammi una gratia, amore
Imagine a Renaissance court gathering, perhaps a feast or a private entertainment, where this delightful Italian secular madrigal might be performed. Heinrich Isaac's Fammi una gratia, amore is a charming three-part work for ATB voices, a perfect example of the secular part-music popular in the period. The text speaks of a lover's plea to Cupid, begging him to tell his lady that his heart yearns only to serve her. He describes how her beauty affects him like snow in the sun, and how he trembles and grows pale at the thought of her. He asks Cupid to beseech her for mercy, to speak to her of his burning love and to grant him just a moment's audience, so that she might read his fate in his eyes. It's a tender and passionate expression of unrequited affection, set with delightful musicality.
