About Extollation
Walter Janes's setting of Extollation is a sacred work for SATB choir, blending Latin and English texts. The Latin opening is a jubilant psalm verse calling on all creation, from angels and virtues to the sun, moon, stars, and heavens, to praise the Lord's name. It emphasizes God's creative power, stating that all things were made by His word and remain in eternal existence. The text then moves to a call for praise from the earth, encompassing natural elements like fire, ice, mountains, and trees, as well as all creatures, serpents, birds, and kings. This rich, multifaceted praise forms the core of Janes's choral composition.
