Exsurge Deus by Philippe de Monte — Lyrics

Exsurge Deus et judica causam tuam, memor esto improperiorum tuorum, eorum quae ab insipiente sunt tota die. Ne obliviscaris voces inimicorum tuorum, superbia eorum qui te oderunt ascendit semper. (Ps. 73;2223)

About Exsurge Deus

Philippe de Monte's motet Exsurge Deus is written for a five-part choir of two sopranos, two altos and two basses (SATTB). The powerful Latin text, drawn from Psalms 73 and 70, is a fervent plea for divine intervention against enemies. The composer responds to the urgent text with music of great intensity, his contrapuntal skill creating a dense and compelling texture. The interplay between the voices builds to moments of profound dramatic weight, making this a significant example of late Renaissance sacred motet writing. The extended vocal lines and rich harmonic language demand accomplished singers, rewarding them with a deeply expressive and sonically magnificent performance.
