Exsurgat Deus by Giovanni Girolamo Kapsperger — Lyrics

In finem. Psalmus cantici ipsi David. Exsurgat Deus, et dissipentur inimici ejus; et fugiant qui oderunt eum a facie ejus. Sicut deficit fumus, deficiant; sicut fluit cera a facie ignis, sic pereant peccatores a facie Dei. Et justi epulentur, et exsultent in conspectu Dei, et delectentur in laetitia. Cantate Deo; psalmum dicite nomini ejus: iter facite ei qui ascendit super occasum. Dominus nomen illi; exsultate in conspectu ejus. Turbabuntur a facie ejus, patris orphanorum, et judicis viduarum; Deus in loco sancto suo. Deus qui inhabitare facit unius moris in domo; qui educit vinctos in fortitudine, similiter eos qui exasperant, qui habitant in sepulchris. Deus, cum egredereris in conspectu populi tui, cum pertransires in deserto, terra mota est, etenim caeli distillaverunt, a facie Dei Sinai, a facie Dei Israël. About Exsurgat Deus

This powerful motet for solo voice sets a psalm text of triumph and divine justice. The words call for God to rise up and scatter his enemies, comparing their dissolution to smoke and melting wax. It then contrasts this with the rejoicing of the righteous, who will feast and exult in God's presence. The text speaks of God as a protector of orphans and widows, who delivers the bound from their captivity. Kapsperger's setting, sung in Latin, offers a dramatic and stirring musical interpretation of this biblical scripture, with the solo voice carrying the full weight of the psalm's message.
