About Exaudi me Domine
Written for a solemn occasion, Giovanni Gabrieli's Exaudi me Domine is a powerful motet for double choir, SATB.SATB.ATTB.TTBB. The Latin text is drawn from the Requiem Mass, with elements of the Libera Me and the Dies Irae sequence. It opens with a plea for deliverance from eternal death on the fearsome day of judgment, when heaven and earth will be shaken and the world judged by fire. The music vividly portrays the fear and trembling evoked by this apocalyptic vision. The motet concludes with a prayer for eternal rest and perpetual light for the departed, returning to the opening plea for salvation amidst the fiery judgment.
