About Ex Legis observantia
This sacred hymn in Latin is suitable for services commemorating the Presentation of Christ in the Temple. Johann Hermann Schein composed this setting for SATB choir. The text speaks of the Virgin Mary presenting Christ to the aged Simeon, fulfilling the law. It contrasts the Old Law, bringing darkness and bondage, with Christ, who liberates us from that yoke. Simeon rejoices to embrace the child, and the angelic host sings with him. The lyrics also reflect the longing of ancient prophets for Christ's coming and the divine revelation that arrived with him.
