Evening Op. 22 No. 2 by Horatio W. Parker — Lyrics

1. The sun is gone, the long clouds break And sink adown his golden wake; Behold us, met now work is done To seek Thy grace at evensong. 2. Halfhearted, tardy, cold are we, Warm us, and draw our souls to Thee; Draw us to follow, as the sun, Thy servant, vassal worlds draws on. 3. Break to us, dealer of man's bread, Food fresh from heaven as manna spread, Lest of the poisonous fruits of death Eat the sad soul that hungereth.

About Evening Op. 22 No. 2

The sun descends, the day's work is done. This anthem for soprano solo and SATB choir, sung in English, opens with a scene of twilight and a plea for divine grace at evensong. The text laments human coldness and tardiness, asking God to warm the soul and draw it closer. It continues with a prayer for spiritual nourishment, comparing it to manna from heaven, and a request for God's abundant love and power, rather than meagre gifts. The choir is asked to reflect on the meaning of purity and heavenly birth, culminating in a desire to align with God's will.
