Evening Hymn by Benjamin Jacob — Lyrics

Glory to thee, my God, this night for all the blessings of the light; keep me, O keep me, King of kings, beneath thy own almighty wings. Forgive me, Lord, for thy dear Son, the ill that I this day have done, that with the world, myself, and thee, I, ere I sleep, at peace may be. Teach me to live, that I may dread the grave as little as my bed; teach me to die, that so I may rise glorious at the aweful day.

About Evening Hymn

Benjamin Jacob’s Evening Hymn offers a devotional setting of a well-loved text. The SATB voicing allows for rich harmonic colour, supporting the lyrical flow of the melody. The composer uses the voices to create a sense of comforting reflection, with phrases often passed between parts to create a gentle interplay. The music perfectly captures the humble yet hopeful spirit of the words, which ask for forgiveness, guidance, and peace throughout the night, leading to a renewed service of God upon waking. It is a reflective setting, ideal for moments of quiet contemplation or the conclusion of a service.
