Evening by Henry Thomas Smart — Lyrics

Lo! the day is deep'ning, Night is nigh at hand; Shadows fall and darken Over sea and land; Storm and shine are ended, Toil is past and blest, Take thy welcome slumber, Take thy wellwon rest.

About Evening

Henry Thomas Smart was a prolific Victorian composer of both sacred and secular music. This partsong, Evening, is written for three female voices (SAA). The text describes the coming of night, offering a gentle reflection on the end of the day and the promise of rest. It then extends this imagery to the closing of life, conveying a sense of peace and the completion of one's earthly labours. Smart's setting captures the tranquil and slightly melancholic mood of the words, making it a suitable choice for a reflective moment.
