About Esurientes implevit bonis II
The composer Orlando di Lasso sets the Magnificat text in this sacred motet for two-part choir (SA). The music opens with a sense of calm devotion, the two voices entering in gentle imitation. As the text moves to the Magnificat's famous declaration of God's favour to the humble and the needy, the music blossoms with warmth and assurance. The 'Esurientes implevit bonis' – 'He hath filled the hungry with good things' – is particularly radiant, celebrating God's abundant mercy. Lasso's setting is a concise and devotional response to the scriptural text, suitable for liturgical use or as a standalone sacred offering.
