Es spricht der Unweisen Mund wohl: den rechten Gott wir meinen,
doch ist ihr Herz Unglaubens voll, mit Tat sie ihn verneinen,
ihr Wesen ist verderbet zwar, vor Gott ist es ein Greuel gar,
es tut ihr keiner kein gut.
Gott selbst vom Himmel sah herab auf aller Menschen Kinder,
zu schauen sie er sich begab, ob er jemand möchte finden,
der sein Verstand gerichtet hätt', mit Ernst nach Gottes Worten tät
und fragt nach seinem Willen.
Da war niemand auf rechter Bahn, sie war'n all ausgeschritten,
ein jeder ging nach seinem Wahn und hielt verloren Sitten,
es tät ihr keiner doch kein gut, wiewohl gar viel betrog der Mut,

Heinrich Schütz's motet, Es spricht der Unweisen Mund, SWV 150, opens with a stark, syllabic setting of the text, the voices entering in imitation to depict the folly of the unwise. The SA voices present the first phrase, soon joined by TB, creating a dense texture that reflects the pronouncement of false wisdom. This initial section gives way to a broader, more homophonic setting of God looking down from heaven, the music swelling with the text's exploration of humanity's straying from the righteous path. The SATB voicing here allows for rich harmonic colour as Schütz illustrates the universal straying of mankind. The German text, drawn from Psalm 14, powerfully contrasts the foolishness of the unrighteous with divine observation.
