About Erschallet, ihr Lieder
This cantata movement opens with a jubilant chorus, urging instruments and voices to sound forth. The text speaks of God preparing souls to become his temples, a joyful anticipation of divine presence. Following this grand opening, a recitative brings a more intimate reflection on Jesus' promise to abide with those who love him, a promise echoed in the subsequent aria, which pleads with the Holy Trinity to enter and inhabit our hearts. The work concludes with a vision of the soul as a paradise, breathed upon by the eternal Spirit, the Comforter who is drawing near. Bach’s masterful SATB setting brings this profound devotional text to life with rich harmonic language and contrapuntal texture.
