About Era dunque ne fati, occhi miei cari
Giaches de Wert's Era dunque ne fati, occhi miei cari is a secular Italian madrigal for five voices (SATTB). The text, by Luigi Tansillo, expresses a profound longing for lost love. The narrator reflects on fate, which has driven him far from his beloved, across lands and seas. He recalls the joy he felt in the past, blinded by the light of his lover's eyes, even as he faced the approaching nights. Now, he desperately questions if he will ever see his beloved again, if her light will pierce his darkness, and if he will live long enough to return to her before he dies. Wert's setting captures the anguish and heartfelt yearning of the poem.
