Epicedion by Harold Schonewille — Lyrics

Lèvetoi, crie de nuit au commencement des veilles ; répands ton cœur comme de l’eau devant la face du Seigneur. Lève tes mains vers lui pour la vie de tes petits enfants qui défaillent de faim au coin de toutes les rues.

About Epicedion

Harold Schonewille’s Epicedion is a solo sacred aria for soprano voice. The text, in French, opens with a plea for vigils and the outpouring of one’s heart to the Lord, beseeching Him for the starving children who perish in the streets. The plea turns to lament as the text describes fallen virgins and young men, culminating in the cry of Kyrie eleison. This work offers a profound emotional journey, suitable for contexts requiring deep devotional expression. Its dramatic setting of a text filled with both supplication and sorrow makes it a compelling choice for a solo soprano voice.
