Ephesus by Samuel Holyoke — Lyrics

Oratio Moysi, hominis Dei. Domine, refugium factus es nobis a generatione in generationem. Posuisti iniquitates nostras in conspectu tuo; saeculum nostrum in illuminatione vultus tui. Quoniam omnes dies nostri defecerunt, et in ira tua defecimus. Anni nostri sicut aranea meditabuntur; dies annorum nostrorum in ipsis septuaginta anni.

About Ephesus

This sacred hymn, Ephesus, is set for STB voices and features both Latin and English text. The Latin lyrics, drawn from the Prayer of Moses, speak of God's eternal nature, contrasting it with the fleetingness of human life. The text contemplates human frailty and sin, invoking God's mercy and turning to Him as a refuge. The setting likely offers a contemplative and devotional experience, suitable for reflection on themes of faith, time, and divine protection. The combination of ancient scripture and a hymn structure suggests a piece that bridges historical reverence with accessible expression.
