About Entre golfos de dulzuras
Valls crafts a rich, polyphonic texture for this SATB setting of a Spanish sacred text. The music explores the devotional imagery of the text, portraying a soul seeking solace and rest from worldly 'delights' in the embrace of God. The interplay of the four voices mirrors the internal struggle and ultimate surrender described in the lyrics, with moments of surging passion giving way to profound peace. The composer navigates the contrasting emotions with skillful harmonic language and contrapuntal lines. This villancico, a genre of sacred song popular in Spain, offers a deeply expressive and technically engaging work for a mixed choir.
