BEHOLD AMONG MEN by Lucien DEISS, CSSp — Lyrics
About BEHOLD AMONG MEN
When the choir strikes up "Behold Among Men" at the start of Mass, it immediately sets a tone of profound gathering. Composed by Lucien Deiss, this entrance hymn draws its text directly from Revelation and Ephesians, reminding the congregation of a powerful truth: God has chosen to make His dwelling place right here, among us. The refrain rings out with a triumphant declaration that we are His people, and He is our Lord and God.
The verses walk us through the living reality of the Church. We sing of being called by the prophets, built upon the foundation of the martyrs and Apostles, and grafted onto Jesus the vine. As the sopranos lead the verses, the rest of the choir joins in a unified harmony for the concluding phrase, "The church of Christ the Lord." It is a fitting way to open a liturgy, shifting our focus from the individual to the collective body of Christ as we prepare to worship together.
