En dilectus meus by Caterina Assandra — Lyrics

[En] Dilectus meus loquitur mihi: Surge propera, amica mea, [columba mea,] formosa mea et veni Jam enim hiems transiit, imber abiit et recessit. Flores apparuerunt in terra nostra, tempus putationis advenit.

About En dilectus meus

This attractive motet for two voices, Soprano and Bass, is by the 17th-century Italian composer Caterina Assandra. The Latin text, taken from the Song of Solomon, is a joyful celebration of spring's arrival and the beloved's call to his 'friend'. Assandra's setting perfectly captures the text's imagery of departing winter, blooming flowers, and the cooing of doves. The interplay between the two vocal lines is delicate and imitative, painting a vivid picture of burgeoning love and nature's renewal. It is a perfect piece for a smaller ensemble seeking a short, expressive sacred work.
