About Emendemus in melius a 5
Baldassare Donato's Emendemus in melius is a five-voice motet drawing on Latin liturgical texts. The central theme of the work is repentance and a plea for divine assistance in the face of mortality. The opening lines, "Let us amend for the better the things wherein we have ignorantly sinned; lest, suddenly prevented by the day of death, we seek space for repentance and cannot find it," set a tone of urgent self-examination. This is followed by a prayer for help, "Help us, O God of our salvation, and for the glory of your name deliver us." The composers Donato, Manchicourt, and Morales are credited with accompanying verses that reinforce the themes of sin, injustice, and the transient nature of human life. The setting is suitable for SAATB or SATTB choirs, offering a rich harmonic texture for this profound penitential reflection.
