About Emendemus in melius
This motet is suitable for use during services of penitence or reflection, perhaps in Lent. The Latin text calls for amendment of past sins, urging listeners not to be caught unprepared by death without the chance to repent. The SATB setting expresses this plea with earnestness, acknowledging wrongdoing and asking for divine help. The composer Jacob Regnart, a composer of the later Renaissance, sets this solemn text. The piece includes verses referencing our sins and the ephemeral nature of life, reminding us of our mortality. It concludes with a plea for divine assistance, invoking God's name for deliverance.
