About E MAA WO'LE
"E Maa Wo'le" is a joyous and reverent Yoruba entrance hymn often sung to welcome a newly ordained priest, a bishop, or a visiting cleric into the sanctuary. The title translates to a respectful invitation to come in and tread gently, acknowledging the sacredness of the moment. The choir greets the celebrant as the "Ojiṣẹ Olodumare ti a ya si mimọ"—the consecrated messenger of the Almighty—setting a tone of deep respect and spiritual anticipation for the Mass.
The verses beautifully capture the relationship between the shepherd and the flock. The congregation asks the priest to look upon them with favor and bring God's blessings into their midst. In the second verse, the lyrics acknowledge the weight of the priestly office, while reminding the celebrant that the yoke of the Lord is light. It is a moving piece for ordinations, first Masses, or pastoral visits, wrapping the clergy in the community's prayers and asking God to make them a perfect father to the people.
