Ellend bringt pein by Leonhard Lechner — Lyrics
Ellend bringt pein
dem hertzen mein
daß ich die lieb muß meiden
Mein hertz schreyt ach
von leid der sach
der hasser thut mich neiden
Mit seiner macht
hat er mich bracht
in trawren
in trawren und inn schmertzen
daß er erblind
der mirs nit günd
das wünsch ich im von hertzen.

About Ellend bringt pein
This German secular madrigal by Leonhard Lechner expresses deep sorrow and longing. The text laments how hardship brings pain and forces the singer to avoid love, with envy and hatred causing suffering. The composer captures this anguish in the ATB voicing, creating a poignant and dramatic musical setting. The second stanza shifts to an intense devotion, with the singer describing how a beautiful image has captured their heart and soul. They long to be constantly with this beloved, finding solace and expressing a wish to be forever united in heart and spirit.
