Michael Praetorius arranged this celebrated German chorale, Ein feste Burg ist unser Gott, for three-part male voices. The text, Martin Luther’s famous hymn, presents a steadfast trust in God as a refuge against the forces of evil. It speaks of God as a strong fortress, a good defense and weapon, who helps us out of all trouble. The second verse clarifies that human might is insufficient, but God’s chosen champion, Jesus Christ, will win the day. The hymn concludes with defiance against the devil, assuring that despite the world being full of evil, believers will ultimately succeed.
