Ego flos campi a 8 by Francisco Guerrero — Lyrics

Ego flos campi et lilium convallium. Sicut lilium inter spinas sic amica mea inter filias. Sicut malus inter ligna silvarum, sic dilectus meus inter filios. Sub umbra illius quem desideraveram sedi, et fructus ejus dulcis gutturi meo. Introduxit me Rex in cellam vinariam ordinavit in me charitatem.

About Ego flos campi a 8

This magnificent eight-part motet by Francisco Guerrero sets a sensual and evocative Latin text drawn from the Song of Songs. It is ideal for services during Marian festivals or the Easter season, or as a standalone motet for a choir that enjoys rich, complex textures. The choir is divided into two SATB groups, allowing for antiphonal effects and dense, homophonic passages. Guerrero’s masterful setting luxuriates in the imagery of the bride and bridegroom, with moments of tender intimacy and ecstatic praise. The text’s comparison of the beloved to a lily and an apple tree, and the plea for flowers and apples, are brought to life through the composer’s vibrant musical language. The rich eight-part voicing offers a truly immersive sound world for singers and listeners alike.
