Ego flos campi by Jan Tollius — Lyrics

Ego flos campi et lilium convallium. Sicut lilium inter spinas sic amica mea inter filias. Sicut malus inter ligna silvarum, sic dilectus meus inter filios. Sub umbra illius quem desideraveram sedi, et fructus ejus dulcis gutturi meo. Introduxit me Rex in cellam vinariam ordinavit in me charitatem.

About Ego flos campi

This setting of the Song of Solomon by Jan Tollius is ideal for a special occasion, perhaps during Lent or at Marian services. The rich SAATB voicing allows for a full, resonant sound, bringing out the sensuous imagery of the Latin text. The choir will explore the lush harmonies as the music unfolds the biblical verses. The text speaks of the beloved as a flower of the field, comparing their love to a lily among thorns and an apple tree among the trees of the forest. It evokes a sheltered garden and a fountain of living waters, culminating in a plea for the lover to be comforted with flowers and apples, for they are languishing with love. This motet offers a profound musical expression of sacred love and devotion.
