About Ego dormio et cor meum vigilat
Tiburtio Massaino was a composer active in the late 16th and early 17th centuries, a period rich in sacred polyphony. This motet, Ego dormio et cor meum vigilat, is set for SATTB choir and uses Latin text drawn from the Song of Songs. The lyrics describe a dialogue between the Bride and Bridegroom. The Bride speaks of her heart being awake while she sleeps, and the Bridegroom calls to her to open. She responds by explaining why she cannot immediately welcome him, having already removed her tunic and washed her feet. The intimacy of the text is reflected in the rich, five-part vocal writing, creating a devotional yet passionate musical setting.
