Ego Dormio, et cor meum vigilat

Heinrich Schütz's motet Ego dormio, et cor meum vigilat is written for SATB and STTB voices, making full use of a rich eight-part texture. The Latin text draws from the Song of Songs. In the first part, the singer declares, "I sleep, and my heart is awake," then invites "my sister, my love, my dove, my perfect one" to open to them, as their head is full of dew and their locks with the drops of the night. The second part shifts to a tender address, "You have wounded my heart, my dearest daughter, with one look of your eyes, with one ringlet of your neck." This work is a profound exploration of spiritual longing and divine love, presented with Schütz's characteristic harmonic depth and contrapuntal skill within the sacred motet tradition.
