About Eccomi pronta ai baci
This secular Italian madrigal for TTB voices captures a moment of intense emotion. The text describes a lover’s plea to be kissed, but with a warning against biting. As the kiss becomes too rough, the speaker cries out in pain and vows never to kiss again. Monteverdi’s setting, likely intended for intimate performance in a courtly setting, uses the distinctive colours of the three male voice parts to reflect the drama and passion of the words, from the initial eager invitation to the final anguished protest.
