Luca Marenzio’s Ecco l'aurora con l'aurata fronte captures the dawning of a new day. The Italian text describes the aurora’s golden face appearing on the horizon, chasing away the night. As the sun rises, the air is filled with light. However, the narrator’s joy is tinged with sorrow, as they weep at the arrival of dawn. This secular madrigal for SATTB voices masterfully contrasts the beauty of the natural world with the singer’s personal lament, a common theme in Renaissance polyphony.
