Ecco di dolci raggi by Claudio Monteverdi — Lyrics

About Ecco di dolci raggi

Claudio Monteverdi's Ecco di dolci raggi is a secular Italian madrigal for a solo tenor voice. The music opens with a sense of gentle warmth, evoking the sun's rays and the blossoming spring season. The text paints a picture of nature in love, with the wind sleeping and the grass rippling, all breathing love. This idyllic scene contrasts with the poet's own previous state of being armed against love's attacks, like a harsh winter's frost. However, with the changing season and the influence of two beautiful eyes, his usual rigour disarms, and he can no longer defend himself. The final plea, Arda dunque d'amor, arda il mio core!, expresses his capitulation to love's power, as his heart burns with passion.
