A striking example of the Italian Renaissance madrigal, this SSATTB setting by Giovanni Andrea Dragoni sets a Petrarchan sonnet by Jacopo Sannazaro. The text, deeply personal and full of classical allusion, opens with a direct address to nature itself – shores, woods, sea – imploring them to bear witness to the singer's profound grief and ancient laments. The poem moves from the external landscape to an internal plea for the beloved, questioning whether any true love exists among the stones, and expressing the pain of unrequited affection.
