About Ecce quam bonum

Ludwig Senfl’s motet Ecce quam bonum is for SATB choir. It sets the Hebrew text from Psalm 133, which is also known in its Latin translation from the Vulgate. The opening phrase, 'Behold how good and how pleasant it is for brethren to dwell together in unity', is a beautiful sentiment that Senfl expresses through flowing vocal lines. The music unfolds with a gentle homophonic texture that allows the words to be heard clearly, before developing into more imitative passages that reflect the 'dwelling together' of the voices. This is a contemplative setting, ideal for a moment of reflection within a sacred service or concert programme.
