ẸBỌ by LIVINUS OJEFUA — Lyrics
About ẸBỌ
"Ẹbọ" (Sacrifice) is a vibrant Yoruba Offertory hymn composed by Livinus Ojefua. Originally written for a choir competition in the Ikeja deanery in 2015, the piece carries the energetic, rhythmic drive and rich vocal layering typical of Nigerian Catholic choral festivals. It opens with a bright call to bring the sacrifice forward, setting a joyful tone for the procession of gifts.
The lyrics are deeply rooted in the Eucharistic mystery. In the first verse, the choir sings, "Akara ti a mu wa, yoo d'ara Oluwa" (The bread we bring will become the body of the Lord) and "Ọti ti a mu wa, yoo d'ẹjẹ Oluwa" (The wine we bring will become the blood of the Lord). As the song progresses, it weaves in powerful traditional praise names for God, calling on "Alewilese" (He who speaks and acts) and "Oyigiyigi Alapa gbanigbani" (The immovable rock with delivering arms) to accept the offering.
For a choir, this piece is a delight to sing. The dynamic shifts between unison lines and complex, overlapping harmonies keep the singers engaged and the congregation uplifted. It is a perfect choice for a festive Sunday Mass, turning the Offertory into a true celebration of giving and divine transformation.
