Ebealen Mo Itohan

When we prepare for the Penitential Rite, we look for music that helps the congregation truly pause and seek God's grace. "Ebealen Mo Itohan" is a gentle, reverent setting of the Kyrie in the Esan language, composed by Emre Matthew and Emmanuella Eromonsele. Singing the Mass parts in indigenous languages always brings a special kind of warmth to the liturgy, allowing the familiar prayers of repentance to feel deeply personal and grounded for the people in the pews.

The arrangement flows naturally through the traditional three parts of the rite. It opens with the solemn "Ebealen", moves into the central call to Christ ("Kristi, ma luemhin ebe"), and returns to the opening invocation. The SATB harmonies are written to be smooth and reflective, giving the choir a chance to blend beautifully without overpowering the quiet, solemn mood of the moment.

This is the kind of piece that works wonderfully during Sunday Mass, inviting everyone to take a breath, lay down their burdens, and prepare their hearts for the Liturgy of the Word. The vocal lines are accessible, making it a lovely addition to a choir's repertoire for the introductory rites.
