EAT THIS BREAD by Jacques Berthier — Lyrics
About EAT THIS BREAD
There is a profound stillness that settles over the church when the choir begins "Eat This Bread." Composed by Jacques Berthier for the Taizé community, this simple yet deeply moving chant has become a beloved staple for Communion in parishes everywhere. Its strength lies in its gentle repetition, allowing both the choir and the congregation to internalize the words of Christ without needing to bury their faces in a hymnbook.
The refrain is an open invitation, echoing the Bread of Life discourse from the Gospel of John: "Eat this bread, drink this cup, come to me and never be hungry." As the choir sustains the four-part harmony of the refrain, a cantor or unison section weaves in the verses, recalling the manna in the desert and the promise of eternal life. It creates a continuous flow of prayer that perfectly matches the procession to the altar.
Singing this piece requires a delicate touch. The harmonies are rich but meant to be sung with a quiet, steady devotion rather than overpowering volume. When we sing it during the Eucharistic banquet, it feels less like a performance and more like a shared meditation, drawing everyone present into the mystery of the sacrament.
